Personal Statement

I graduated from college with a film degree and a plan to be a documentary filmmaker. While filming a medical team in Peru, I was moved and inspired by the deep care, practical teaching, and community partnership between the medical care providers and the local people. The physicians had become part of the community fabric — they knew their patients and their families, valued their perspectives and experiences, they were compassionate and attentive listeners, and they became trusted partners and advocates for their patients. I made the transition from Film to Medicine knowing that everyone has a story, and it is a privilege to walk alongside people as they navigate their own journey to healing. When a person feels heard and supported, they gain the confidence to take charge of their health, leading to better outcomes and an improved quality of life.
